The Power of the People

I haven’t been watching the news much lately, mainly to avoid being drawn into the worthless debate of why things are going the way they are and who is at fault and the rest of that bull. I have come to the conclusion that it’s a waste of time to follow every swerve and turn the idiots and pundits make. It’s designed, in my opinion, to keep you polarized and pissed off. A waste of time.

However, I have been exposed to enough news to hear about the disrespect and continuing fabrications being pushed by the corporate shills and hard core right wing members of the citizens councils and the republican party ,on capitol hill and in town halls everywhere. I heard Congressman Wilson call our president a liar and then I watched as Obama, didn’t lash that chump with a million and a half cleverly deployed words designed to cause him and his kind to melt like the wicked witch of the south.

I think our Prez is too nice to this scum. I would have at a minimum talked about his mother, or called him a few choice derogatory code words or challenged him to a debate, the loser to be tarred and feathered, butt naked on C-span.

So, I have been exposed enough to know what is going on, but not so much as to allow it monopolize my mind in any way. But I did have an idea.

All the honest, decent Americans that detest this kind of shenanigans should mobilize and kick these mud slinging worm brains in the pockets and in a major way. How? Easy.

I read a while back how Glen Beck lost a slew of sponsors after complaints were made to a sponsor’s corporate office by displeased “Fox” viewers. Frankly I never knew such a thing existed, Fox viewers with brains and enough follow through to write a letter. They most likely don’t exist. It’s more likely, some MSNBC folk and perhaps a CNNer or two, flexing a finger or two and penned a letter and thereby deprived Beck of his life blood, money from big corporations.

I decided that it would be a good thing to champion an utter avalanche of complaints by “Fox” viewers to the sponsors of unruly Fox shows. Why not use the power of the pen to neutralize the right wing chatter boxes and flex a little people power.

The threat of boycott is a potent one. An actual boycott that adjusts the bottom lines of a company is a game changer. Why is the left not using this tool more widely? Lack of direction or apathy may be to blame, but both are easily overcome yet nearly impossible to triumph over.

There are surely many corporations that will gladly fill the void of lost revenues, but the process of shaming sponsors tends to degrade the quality of the sponsors available to the crazy TV and radio guys and eventually their shows will be sponsored by Big Jims Deer Urine, Wild Bills Catfish Bait and Redneck Ricks bail bonds.

My idea does require something that is rarer than dancing, French speaking, six toed bear with a Mohawk. Personal initiative and follow through. But readers of this blog might just be the few that would actually do something clever like this.

Write an E-mail to a sponsors of any show, radio or TV, right wing or liberal left, which ever pisses you off, for what ever reason you feel is worthy. Why not, embellish, contrive, hell even fabricate your outrage, like the pros do. Tell them your going to tell your church, or bowling club or bridge buddies that you are not going to support them, because you don’t like what they support.

Will they care? Who knows, but it will be fun anyway.

So I challenge you, complain about something,to someone, at some company. Tell them that you will spend your life telling people how evil they are and how if you use their products, you will go to hell. I'm going to, I'll share my letter tomorrow.

What do you think?
